Emergency Grants for UNOH Students

COVID-19 HEERF III Emergency Grants for UNOH Students

The University of Northwestern Ohio offered $1,000 - $4,000 HEERF III Emergency Grants for eligible students who were experiencing financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

These HEERF III Emergency Grants could be used by eligible students who were struggling with tuition and living expenses or facing other unexpected financial challenges related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, including expenses such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care expenses incurred after March 13, 2020.

American Rescue Plan (ARP)

As part of the American Rescue Plan (ARP), money was set aside for Higher Education Institutions to provide aid to students facing financial hardships.  This third fund, the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund III (HEERF III), granted the University of Northwestern Ohio $10,420,936 to help mitigate financial impacts of the pandemic.

The University of Northwestern Ohio signed and returned to the U.S. Department of Education the Certification and Agreement with the assurance that UNOH intends to use no less than 50% of the funds received under Section 2003 (a)(1) of the ARP and Section 314 of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) to provide HEERF III Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

The student portion of funds received by UNOH designated for HEERF III Emergency Grants amounts to $5,292,066.  This money was allocated to directly assist eligible students experiencing financial hardships caused by the continued impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The remaining funds are designated to the University to offset additional pandemic related expenses. 

To be eligible for the federal relief dollars, students had to meet all guidelines as determined by UNOH and the US Department of Education. Eligible Students must have attended classes on or after March 13, 2020. Domestic students (U.S. Citizens) must have a 2021-2022 FAFSA on file with the University. Any student selected for verification may require verification to be completed. A domestic student’s expected family contribution (EFC) indicated on the Student

Aid Report from the FAFSA will be used in the determination of need. Undocumented or International Students must have a verified financial need per their HEERF III application.

There were approximately 1,712 students eligible to receive Emergency Grants from UNOH through the HEERF III Grant program.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Students were asked to fill out the application for the grant found on the MyUNOH Portal until funds are exhausted.
  • UNOH Administration reviewed each application to determine eligibility.

Applications were reviewed as they were received. Funds were disbursed until they were exhausted. For those eligible, the HEERF III Emergency Grant was either directly deposited into the student’s bank account or a check was mailed to their address on file with the University within 30 business days of receipt of the application.  

In order to receive the HEERF III Emergency Grant funds in a timely manner, the University encouraged students to sign up for direct deposit.  Step-by-step instructions to setup direct deposits were available on the Cashier’s Office website at https://www.unoh.edu/offices/cashiers-office/

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

HEERF III Emergency Grants were awarded in accordance with federal, state, and institutional rules and regulations.  The U.S. Department of Education requirements are listed below.

Eligible Students must:

  • Have attended classes on or after March 13, 2020.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or national, permanent resident, or other eligible noncitizen.
    • Have a 2021-2022 FAFSA on file in Financial Aid office.
    • Any student selected for verification may require verification to be completed.
    • A student’s expected family contribution (EFC) indicated on the Student Aid Report will be used in the determination of need.
  • Have experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19 after March 13, 2020

or

  • Be an International or undocumented student
    • Have a verified financial need per their HEERF III application.
  • Have attended classes on or after March 13, 2020.
  • Have experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19 after March 13, 2020.

2021 COVID-19 Emergency Grants for UNOH Students

The University of Northwestern Ohio offered Emergency Grants ranging from $1,000 - $2,100 for eligible students who were experiencing financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

These emergency grants could be used by eligible students who were struggling with tuition and living expenses or facing other unexpected financial challenges related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, including expenses such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care expenses incurred after December 27, 2020.

CRRSA Act

As part of the Federal Coronavirus Relief and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA), money was set aside for Higher Education Institutions to provide aid to students facing financial hardships.  This second fund, the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II (HEERF II), granted the University of Northwestern Ohio $3,906,342 to help mitigate financial impact of the pandemic.

50% of the funds received by UNOH amounts to $1,953,171.  This money was allocated to directly assist eligible students experiencing financial hardships caused by the continued impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The remaining funds are designated to the University to offset additional pandemic-related expenses.

To be eligible for the federal relief dollars, a student needs to have attended classes on or after December 27, 2020, have a 2020-2021 FAFSA on file, and demonstrate financial need as defined by the FAFSA which includes an expected family contribution (EFC) between $0 and $16,000. In addition, students must meet all guidelines as determined by UNOH and the US Department of Education.  A list of these eligibility requirements is listed below.

There were approximately 1,567 students eligible to receive Emergency Grants from UNOH through the HEERF II Grant program.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Students were required to fill out the application for the grant found on the MyUNOH Portal prior to June 1, 2021.
  • UNOH Emergency Grant Committee will review each application to determine eligibility.

Applications were reviewed as they were received. Funds were disbursed until they were exhausted. For those eligible, the Emergency Grant was posted to the student’s account and used to cover university charges, or a check or direct deposit was processed within 30 business days of receipt of the application.  Final due date for applications was June 1, 2021.

COVID-19 Emergency Financial Assistance for UNOH Students

The University of Northwestern Ohio offered $1,000 grants for eligible students who are experiencing financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic.

These emergency grants can be used by eligible students who are struggling with living expenses or facing other unexpected financial challenges related to the disruption of campus operations due to this pandemic, including expenses such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care.

CARES Act Funding

As part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, money was set aside for Higher Education Institutions to provide aid to students facing financial hardships.  This fund, the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF), granted the University of Northwestern Ohio $3,906,342 to help mitigate financial impact of the pandemic.

To be eligible for the federal relief dollars, a student needed to have been in attendance on March 13, 2020 and be currently enrolled in a degree or diploma program during this coronavirus period, with a FAFSA on file and be eligible to receive Title IV federal financial aid. In addition, students must have met all guidelines as determined by the US Department of Education. A list of these eligibility requirements is listed below.

There are approximately 1,765 students eligible to receive $1,000 Emergency Grants from UNOH through the CARES Act program.

Application Process

  • Students were asked to fill out the application for the grant found on the MyUNOH Portal prior to July 10, 2020.
  • UNOH Financial Aid officers reviewed each application to determine eligibility.

Applications were reviewed as they were received.  For those eligible, the $1,000 Emergency Grant was posted to the student’s account and the check or direct deposit processed within 14 business days of receipt of the application.  Final due date for applications was Friday, July 10, 2020. 

Following the application deadline, remaining funds were distributed evenly among students who remained eligible and maintained an actively enrolled status in a traditionally delivered degree or diploma program at UNOH. 

In order to receive the Emergency Grant funds in a timely manner, the University encouraged students to sign up for direct deposit. Step-by-step instructions to setup direct deposits are available on the MyUNOH portal.

Eligibility requirements

Emergency Grants are awarded in accordance with federal, state, and institutional rules and regulations. The U.S. Department of Education requirements are listed below.

Eligible Students must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or national, permanent resident, or other eligible noncitizen.
  • Be currently enrolled in a traditionally delivered degree or diploma program on March 13, 2020, the date of President Trump’s National Emergency declaration due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
  • Have a FAFSA on file in Financial Aid office.
  • Be making satisfactory academic progress.
  • Not owe an overpayment on Title IV grants or loans, or not be in default on Title IV loans.
  • Have returned fraudulently obtained Title IV funds if convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to charges.
  • Not have fraudulently received Title IV loans in excess of annual or aggregate limits.
  • Have repaid Title IV loan amounts in excess of annual or aggregate limits if obtained inadvertently.
  • Have Selective Service registration verified.
  • Not have a federal or state conviction for drug possession or sale, with certain time limitations.

GRANT DISBURSEMENT STATUS

HEERF I Student Portion (CARES Grant)

As of July 31, 2020, 1,468 students received emergency funding through the CARES Grant program. The total amount awarded as of this date is $1,953,877.  The student portion of the HEERF funding has been exhausted and any applicant who applied by July 10, 2020 and met eligibility requirements at the time was awarded assistance.

HEERFII Student Portion

As of June 8, 2021, 1,189 students received emergency funding through the HEERF II Emergency Grant program. The total amount awarded as of this date is $1,991,800. The student portion of the HEERF II funding has been exhausted and any applicant who applied by June 1, 2021 and met eligibility requirements at the time was awarded assistance.

HEERF III Student Portion

As of October 12, 2021, 1,776 students received emergency funding through the HEERF III Emergency Grant program. The total amount awarded as of this date is $5,363,000. The student portion of the HEERF III funding has been exhausted and any applicant who applied by September 17, 2021 and met eligibility requirements at the time was awarded assistance.

HEERF Institutional Portion

The University of Northwestern Ohio must also report the amount of remaining funds designated to the University to offset additional expenses created by the pandemic on a quarterly basis.  These reports are posted below and will be updated quarterly with current disbursement amounts awarded to the University of Northwestern Ohio from the U.S. Department of Education.
