2021 COVID-19 Emergency Grants for UNOH Students

The University of Northwestern Ohio offered Emergency Grants ranging from $1,000 - $2,100 for eligible students who were experiencing financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

These emergency grants could be used by eligible students who were struggling with tuition and living expenses or facing other unexpected financial challenges related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, including expenses such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care expenses incurred after December 27, 2020.

CRRSA Act

As part of the Federal Coronavirus Relief and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA), money was set aside for Higher Education Institutions to provide aid to students facing financial hardships.  This second fund, the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II (HEERF II), granted the University of Northwestern Ohio $3,906,342 to help mitigate financial impact of the pandemic. 

The University of Northwestern Ohio signed and returned to the U.S. Department of Education the Certification and Agreement with the assurance that UNOH intends to use no less than 50% of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

50% of the funds received by UNOH amounts to $1,953,171.  This money was allocated to directly assist eligible students experiencing financial hardships caused by the continued impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The remaining funds are designated to the University to offset additional pandemic-related expenses.

To be eligible for the federal relief dollars, a student needs to have attended classes on or after December 27, 2020, have a 2020-2021 FAFSA on file, and demonstrate financial need as defined by the FAFSA which includes an expected family contribution (EFC) between $0 and $16,000. In addition, students must meet all guidelines as determined by UNOH and the US Department of Education.  A list of these eligibility requirements is listed below.

There were approximately 1,567 students eligible to receive Emergency Grants from UNOH through the HEERF II Grant program.

APPLICATION PROCESS

• Students were required to fill out the application for the grant found on the MyUNOH Portal prior to June 1, 2021.
• UNOH Emergency Grant Committee will review each application to determine eligibility.

Applications were reviewed as they were received. Funds were disbursed until they were exhausted. For those eligible, the Emergency Grant was posted to the student’s account and used to cover university charges, or a check or direct deposit was processed within 30 business days of receipt of the application.  Final due date for applications was June 1, 2021.

In order to receive the Emergency Grant funds in a timely manner, the University encouraged students to sign up for direct deposit.  Step-by-step instructions to setup direct deposits are available on the MyUNOH portal.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Emergency Grants were awarded in accordance with federal, state, and institutional rules and regulations.  The U.S. Department of Education requirements are listed below.

Eligible Students must:

• Be a U.S. citizen or national, permanent resident, or other eligible noncitizen.
• Have attended classes on or after December 27, 2020
• Have a 2020-2021 FAFSA on file in Financial Aid office.
  • Students selected for verification must have verification completed.
• Have a financial need as defined by the FAFSA which includes an expected family contribution (EFC) between $0 -$16,000 as indicated on the Student Aid Report.
• Have experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19 after December 27, 2020.

COVID-19 Emergency Financial Assistance for UNOH Students

These emergency grants can be used by eligible students who are struggling with living expenses or facing other unexpected financial challenges related to the disruption of campus operations due to this pandemic, including expenses such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care.

To be eligible for the federal relief dollars, a student needed to have been in attendance on March 13, 2020 and be currently enrolled in a degree or diploma program during this coronavirus period, with a FAFSA on file and be eligible to receive Title IV federal financial aid. In addition, students must have met all guidelines as determined by the US Department of Education. A list of these eligibility requirements is listed below.

There are approximately 1,765 students eligible to receive $1,000 Emergency Grants from UNOH through the CARES Act program.

Application Process

• Students were asked to fill out the application for the grant found on the MyUNOH Portal prior to July 10, 2020.
• UNOH Financial Aid officers reviewed each application to determine eligibility.

Applications were reviewed as they were received.  For those eligible, the $1,000 Emergency Grant was posted to the student’s account and the check or direct deposit processed within 14 business days of receipt of the application.  Final due date for applications was Friday, July 10, 2020. 

Following the application deadline, remaining funds were distributed evenly among students who remained eligible and maintained an actively enrolled status in a traditionally delivered degree or diploma program at UNOH.

Eligibility requirements

Eligible Students must:

• Be a U.S. citizen or national, permanent resident, or other eligible noncitizen.
• Be currently enrolled in a traditionally delivered degree or diploma program on March 13, 2020, the date of President Trump’s National Emergency declaration due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
• Have a FAFSA on file in Financial Aid office.
• Be making satisfactory academic progress.
• Not owe an overpayment on Title IV grants or loans, or not be in default on Title IV loans.
• Have returned fraudulently obtained Title IV funds if convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to charges.
• Not have fraudulently received Title IV loans in excess of annual or aggregate limits.
• Have repaid Title IV loan amounts in excess of annual or aggregate limits if obtained inadvertently.
• Have Selective Service registration verified.
• Not have a federal or state conviction for drug possession or sale, with certain time limitations.
