International Parents

UNOH is a home away from home for our international students who come to Lima, Ohio from around the world every year. Admissions requirements are slightly different for students from outside the United States. Here are some important things to remember if you are the parent of an international student who wishes to attend the University of Northwestern Ohio:

  • Show interest in the new experiences of your student. Listen closely and be supportive.
  • Ask questions! Part of the college transition to adulthood is that your child will be making their own decisions. Sometimes these decisions will not be what you would have done, or expected. Ask questions and look for aspects that show your support of their new independence, rather than critiquing.
  • Ask about their academic schedule:
    • Students must submit the University’s Application for Enrollment and an official copy of a secondary level or high school academic record indicating successful completion of the program. (International students completing their last year of secondary level education in the United States as exchange students must submit an academic record from the U.S. high school they currently attend, as well as the school they last attended in their home country. A letter should also be submitted from a high school official [i.e. guidance counselor] who is familiar with the student’s academic progress, recommending the students for the majors they have selected.)
    • If students have previously attended colleges or universities, official copies of these records must also be submitted. All records should be submitted in English.
    • Students who are from countries where English is not the dominant or common language must also submit one of the following results:
      • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) 6.0 minimum required score
      • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum TOEFL iBT score of 61; a minimum CBT score of 173
      • Have TOEFL or IELTS send an official report directly to UNOH or add UNOH to your list of schools online.  The TOEFL institutional code for UNOH is 0570.

The application fee of $20 must be in U.S. currency and accompany the application for enrollment.

Financial aid for international students is not offered by the University of Northwestern Ohio. Therefore, students are required to submit documentation of sufficient financial resources to meet university expenses. If students are sponsored by an individual or other source, an official letter of verification from that sponsor must also be submitted.

All records need to be originals and translated to English by an acceptable source.

After students submit the above-mentioned items, the University will review the materials and will issue Form I-20, Certificate of Eligibility, if all required items are in order.
