Association of Computing Machinery
The University of Northwestern Ohio has a new forum for Information Technology students to interact and share knowledge. A Student Chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) was recently commissioned. The ACM gives the students access to high-quality computing and IT information, career and professional development opportunities as well as extensive professional connections within the community.
Founded in 1947, the ACM is a major force in advancing the skills of information technology professionals and students worldwide. ACM established student chapters to provide an opportunity for students to play a more active role in the association and its professional activities. Today, more than 700 colleges and universities throughout the world participate in the ACM Student Chapter Program, whose aims are to enhance learning through exchange of ideas among students and between established professionals and students. The ACM Distinguished Lectureship Program is one activity designed specifically to promote contact between students and computing professionals.
Two annual highpoints of interest and excitement for students are the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), sponsored by IBM, and the ACM Student Research Competition (SRC), sponsored by Microsoft Research. The ICPC: Three-five-person teams of students from all over the world engage in regional competitions during the year; the winners qualify for the thrilling final tournament. The SCR: An internationally recognized venue for undergraduate and graduate researchers to share their research results, exchange ideas and gain new insights with professionals and students; students meet and talk with academic and industry luminaries, understand the possible practical applications of their research, perfect their communications skills, receive rewards and recognition.
The ACM Student Chapter will focus on community service, educational goals, career development and fund raising events.
Auto-Cross Club
The purpose of the Auto-X Club is to provide students with a sports car
activity that is both safe and exciting. This is a form of competition
that is much like a slalom-type ski competition. In this case,
a course is marked in small pylons (called “cones”). The
goal is to drive through the course with the quickest time possible and
without hitting any cones. Meetings are held every Tuesday in the
600 High Performance Lounge at 12:30 and 6:00 pm.
Business Professionals of America (BPA)
Business Professionals of America has a history as a student organization that contributes to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills for students at the Postsecondary level.
Diesel Club
The Diesel Club promotes the diesel engine and its uses in performance
applications, such as pulling trucks, high-performance vehicles, and
as an alternative to gasoline powered vehicles. In addition to
diesel fuel, the club also explores the applications of alternative fuels
(Bio-Diesel, Propane, and Natural Gas) as an additive to existing engines
and as a fuel source.
Drag Club
The Drag Club was started to give students who are interested in Drag
Racing a place to meet. Student involvement can range from maintaining
the school’s three drag cars to racing their own cars at several
races planned over the summer. Some of the club members even work
on outside teams while still in school to gain valuable experience. Meetings
are held every other week in the 600 building.

Medical Assistants of the
University of Northwestern Ohio (MA UNOH)
Current students in the Medical Assisting program can participate in the student group and develop knowledge that goes beyond the classroom. The purpose of this group is to provide opportunities to the students to exchange information with members of the medical community, explore various career opportunities, develop leadership skills, render community service, and interact with Certified Medical Assistants.
Off-Road Club
The University of Northwestern Ohio's Off-Road Club started in mid-2002 in response to student interest in off-road activities. The Club meets regularly and is operated by a cooperative participation of interested faculty, student officers and the University. Open to any student, the Club promotes technical and personal improvement in off-road skills, safety and care of the environment through involvement with "Tread Lightly." Local activities, competitions and occasional off-road trips are favorites of club members.
Over-the-Wall Club
The Over-the-Wall Club was organized so that students could improve pit crew skills such as jacking, tire changing, and tire carrying. The club also has a conditioning program, which concentrates on agility, mental and nutritional aspects of the sport. Weekly meetings are on Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Practice is on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. until noon, and includes students who aspire to or are interested in participating with ARCA, NASCAR or Grand Am style racing.
Race Club
In 1999, University of Northwestern Ohio instructors saw a need to provide students
with an organization that would promote activities centered around the growing
high performance program. The University of Northwestern Ohio Race Club
was developed to meet this need. Since its inception, students have been able
to participate in a variety of programs. A relationship was formed with
Ron Dreger, Director for the ARCA Re/Max Series, and race club members were soon
traveling around the country to volunteer to help on various ARCA Re/Max Series
race teams. The educational experience the students gain from these activities
is invaluable. In the interest of providing students with a well-rounded
education, UNOH Race Club is looking to expand its presence in the ARCA Re/Max
race series and into other areas of motorsports. Other areas being entered include
Grand-Am, NHRA and IHRA, CART, Barber, Dodge Series and USAC.
The University of Northwestern Ohio Race Club meets Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. in the 400 Building museum area. The club helps students gain more experience by participating on race teams. Any University of Northwestern Ohio student may join. Fund raising projects are held for the members to attend racing events. The club is designed to bring together students who like to share in the racing experience such as Circle Track Racing, Drag Racing, Road Course Racing, and other types of racing. Pictures of the students with their teams and racing events are hanging in the 400 Building for others to see where they have been and what they have done.
