In 2008 the University of Northwestern Ohio celebrated its 88th anniversary. Founded in 1920, it is a private, not-for-profit institution. The University of Northwestern Ohio is a co-educational institution authorized by the Ohio Board of Regents to grant master’s degrees, baccalaureate degrees, and associate degrees.

General Education Philosophy
The University of Northwestern Ohio's general education classes
are to provide:
- Skills to achieve academic success as well as
stimulate lifelong learning and personal growth
- A core of knowledge and concepts expected of an educated member
of society
- A global perspective of cultural differences to provide respect
for diversity.
Students will develop competencies in these
areas:
- Critical Thinking: Be able to develop
a frame of reference to assess situations and apply
knowledge to predict and evaluate outcomes.
- Reading: Be able to read and comprehend at the college
level.
- Communication: Be able to effectively communicate thoughts
through different forms of written, spoken, and nonverbal messages.
- Research, Information Retrieval: Be able to find, evaluate,
and use information from a variety of sources, including libraries
and computers.
- Computer Literacy: Be able to use computers and common
software to complete assignments.
- Math: Be able to engage in abstract and quantitative ways
of thinking and problem solving, using mathematical operations and
logic.
These competencies will be encouraged and
developed through courses in the following areas:
- Humanities: Gaining an appreciation
of the individual and societal search for meaning
and expression through writing and other fine arts.
- Global and Cultural Perspectives: Developing an awareness
and understanding of, and respect for, a variety of cultures and
how they differ from one's own, to better live and work in an increasingly
interconnected world.
- Ethics: Gaining an understanding of different systems
of values for judging right and wrong and evaluating and constructing
arguments that can be applied to both business and personal life.
- Social Sciences: Understanding human behavior on both
the individual and group level and learning how an understanding
of the past can be applied to current events.
- Science: Understanding the scientific method and how it
is used to explain the natural world.
Gaining competencies in these areas will help students better understand themselves
and the world around them, enabling them to be better students, employees, and
citizens.
